I am slowly recovering from injury. About 7 weeks ago I suffered a serious bout of Sciatica. The pain in my back quickly subsided, but I have had residual leg pain with numbness and tingling ever since.
In the past 3 weeks I have found I am able to run again to some degree and today I completed the Brighton 10k in 49:31. My PB is 42 minutes something so I’m still way off pace and my leg does ache now, but I am very happy with the time. I was hoping for under 50 mins so I can’t complain and I feel I am definitely on the road to recovery.
Just need to get fit for the Brighton Half, then the Eastbourne Half and then the Paris Marathon next year.
The weather was fantastic. I cycled from Worthing to Hove, parked my bike at a friends and walked to the start on Madeira Drive. It was icy cold when I left the house, but it had really warmed up by the time I got to Brighton and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
The route was the same as in previous years. Initially the race heads out towards Brighton Marina but turns back on itself and the next 6k is a west facing run past the Brighton Wheel and pier and the old West Pier, past the Peace Statue at the border between Brighton and Hove and up to the King Alfred Leisure Centre, where it turns and it’s a straight 3.5k run back to the start/finish line.
I had decided not to worry about my time and concentrate on my leg. If I run slowly the ache in my calf takes longer to come on. So I kept to 8 minute miles all the way. I certainly felt my leg seizing up towards the end, but I also felt I was physically strong and, with no leg pain, could have run faster.
